A Russian academic admitted the possibility of the emergence of a new pandemic strain of influenza.

The new pandemic strain of influenza may appear before 2029. This scenario was admitted by RAN academic and Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Education, Gennady Onischenko, in conversation with Ria Novosti.

According to him, viruses continue to mutate and seek ways to become more aggressive, overcoming the human immune barrier. At the same time, the academic stated that, thanks to the timely development of vaccines, the modern healthcare system has learned to anticipate the emergence of new dangerous infections—approximately one year before their onset.

"It is possible to produce vaccines, scale them up, and create individual and population immunity," highlighted Onischenko.

He added that, in this case, one can speak not only about a country but about the creation of global immunity. In the academic's opinion, such a phenomenon is already close.

Previously, Onischenko made a forecast for the influenza season of 2026-2027 in Russia. According to him, no serious epidemiological situation is expected in the country.
